Schengen visa
This is a general overview - for more details contact the embassy or consulate of your main destination country.
What is a Schengen visa?
A Schengen visa is an entry permit for non-EU nationals to make a short, temporary visit of up to 90 days in any 180-day period to a country in the Schengen area.
Schengen visas come in 3 forms:
- single-entry visa - allowing you to enter the Schengen area once;
- multiple-entry visa - allowing several visits to the Schengen area for as long as the visa is valid;
- airport transit visa - allows you to connect through the international transit area of an airport in the Schengen area during a stopover or a change of flights. It does not allow you to leave the international transit area.
How long can you stay?
The short-stay visa calculator can help you calculate the remaining period you are allowed to stay in a Schengen country.
The user's guide provides step by step instructions and practical examples to help you use the calculator.
Who needs to apply for a Schengen visa?
Citizens of certain non-EU countries must hold a short-stay visa when travelling to the Schengen area.
Consult the EU list of countries whose citizens are required to hold a visa when crossing its external borders. There are exceptions to the visa requirements for certain types of traveller to certain countries (e.g. diplomats, armed forces, refugees, pupils on school excursions).
Airport transit visas
- Some non-EU nationals must also hold an airport transit visa when connecting through the international transit areas of airports located in any of the Schengen States
- For citizens of certain additional countries, an airport transit visa is required when connecting through the international transit areas of airports located in some of the Schengen countries
- There are some categories of people who are exempt from the requirement to hold an airport transit visa (see Article 3(5) of the Visa Code).

You may have to book an appointment before lodging the application.

U.S. Visa
What is a U.S. Visa?
A citizen of a foreign country who seeks to travel to the United States generally must first obtain a U.S. visa. Visas are placed in the traveler’s passport, a travel document issued by the traveler’s country of citizenship.
Certain international travelers may be eligible to travel to the United States without a visa if they meet the requirements for visa-free travel. The visa section of this website contains information on U.S. visas for foreign citizens seeking to travel to the United States.
(Note: U.S. citizens don’t need a U.S. visa for travel, but when planning travel abroad may need a visa issued by the country they wish to visit. When planning travel abroad, learn about visa requirements by country, on the country information page of the International Travel Section of this website).

Important information for making a visa application
You must lodge a complete visa application
A complete application is one that provides all information necessary for a decision to be made. You should support your application with as much information as possible at the time of lodgement as a decision may be made solely on the information that you have provided with your application. If you do not provide a complete application, your visa application may be refused.
You may be asked to provide further documents or information relating to your particular circumstances after your application has been lodged. The list of supporting documentation provided is not exhaustive. You may also include additional documents if they are relevant to your application. You should provide certified copies of all documents. Documents that are not certified will not be accepted. You should also provide an English translation of any document in another language.
You should lodge your visa application well in advance of your planned date of travel
If you lodge your visa application at the last minute, you may be disappointed if you are not granted your visa in time for your planned date of travel. Please lodge your visa application with plenty of time before you intend to travel.
If you enter into any financial commitments prior to the grant of the visa, you do so at your own risk
An airline ticket is not a visa requirement and does not in itself lead to a visa being granted. You should not make unalterable or non-refundable travel arrangements until you have confirmation that you have been granted a visa to travel to Australia. The department will not be liable for any financial loss incurred by clients whose visa application was finalised later than expected or where an application is unsuccessful.
You can appoint an authorised person for the purposes of communication with the department
Australian privacy laws prevent this office from responding to enquiries from people not authorised by the applicant. This includes the person providing support to the application. If you want to authorise another person to be able to discuss your application with this office, or for them to receive correspondence about the application, you should indicate this on the application form, a written statement or by using a form 956.
You must provide a certified translation of documents not in English
All supporting documentation must be in English, or accompanied by a certified translation. Any documents submitted in languages other than English which are not accompanied by a certified translation, cannot be taken into consideration in the assessment of your application.
If your visa application is refused, the decision cannot be revisited by this office in most instances
If your visa application is refused, you may have the right to seek review to a merits review tribunal in Australia. Your refusal notification letter will provide information on how to seek review.
If you do not have access to review, the decision cannot be revisited by this office. It is always open to you to lodge a new visa application if you wish. However, unless circumstances changes significantly or if you provide substantial new information, there is no guarantee of a different outcome.
For more information on review of visa decisions, see: Review of Visa Decisions
Health requirements
All applicants for a visa to Australia must meet health requirements. Whether you are required to undergo a chest xray, medical examination or provide a medical fitness certificate depends on:
1. How long you intend to stay in Australia
2. Your intended activities in Australia, and
3. How old you are.
Please visit the Department of Immigration and Border Protection website for more information about medical requirements, including a list of doctors in Africa who can undertake medical examinations on behalf of the Australian Government.
See: Australian visa health requirements
If you already know that the visa you want to apply for requires a medical examination, you may also arrange to undertake your medical examination before you lodge. You will need to have a HAP ID number before you go to the doctor. For more information and obtaining a HAP ID:
See: My health declarations
If you have completed your medical examination before you lodge your application, please note this on your application.
Visa label free travel
Australia is visa label free, so visas are recorded electronically and will be confirmed by airline staff when you board your plane for Australia, and by Australian border officials when you arrive in Australia. If you are granted a visa, you will be sent a notification letter, that you should take with you when you travel. You should check your personal details (name, date of birth and passport number) on the letter to ensure they are correct.
